Where did the name come from?
Glory to God in the highest
“Come and have breakfast,” said the Lamb in its sweet milky voice.
Then they noticed for the first time that there was a fire lit on the grass and fish roasting on it. They sat down and ate the fish, hungry now for the first time for many days. And it was the most delicious food they had ever tasted.
“Please lamb,” said Lucy, “is this the way to Aslan’s country?” …
“There is a way into my country from all the worlds,” said the Lamb; but as he spoke his snowy white flushed into tawny gold and his size changed and he was Aslan himself, towering above them and scattering light from his mane.
- C.S. Lewis, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader
In the above scene, author and Christian apologist C.S. Lewis invokes the Bible’s central image for Our Lord: the Lamb of God.
The Lamb stands in heaven at the center of all things:
And between the throne and the four living creatures and among the elders I saw a Lamb standing, as though it had been slain, with seven horns and with seven eyes, which are the seven spirits of God sent out into all the earth. And [the Lamb] went and took the scroll from the right hand of him who was seated on the throne. And when he had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders fell down before the Lamb, each holding a harp, and golden bowls full of incense, which are the prayers of the saints. And they sang a new song…
- Revelation 5:6-9
And, the Lamb was to be slain before the foundation of the world:
[You were ransomed] with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot. He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you.
- 1 Peter 1:19-20
What a mystery. What a profound truth. What a reason to exalt and praise God! Together, we are working to build a church that exalts the God’s Lamb. No matter where you are, there is a Way into Aslan’s country. It is the Way of the Lamb.
